Porno utopia: Masculinity between hedonistic green houses, chemical erections and surreal orgasms

Knut Kolnar

This article addresses a documentary on the world’s most famous manly porn star, Ron Jeremy alias ‘The Hedgehog’. Questions about masculinity, the conditions of intimacy, the meaning of sex and the changing nature of pleasure and sexual arousal are put anew at strange and surprising places in society. During the last decade pornoland has become a huge realm with its own stars, economy and outcasts. In these margins of society old logics of identity are followed in new ways. New figures like the suitcase pimp and the ‘meateater’ secure the identity, the authenticity and skilful erections of the real porn star. The stunt fuck of the porn performer underlines the traditional notions of ‘the sexual pleasure gap’, saying that pleasure is always easy for a man, while women have to work for it, thus hiding the complexities in manly lust and sexual fulfilment. The combination of an ever expanding media society combined with the new porno-chic wave creates a ‘new flesh’, alter the erotic economy and add new facets to our sexual arousals perhaps making us newcomers and strangers in our own bodies. This article ends with contemplating the visions of porn utopia as central to the dynamics of contemporary society. Subsequently is also engages in its possible features.
