This issue of NORMA, nr 2, 2009, based on papers presented at the conference “Changing Men and Masculinities in Gender Equal Societies?” at Roskilde University in January 2009, and an interview with the South African masculinity studies scholar Robert Morrell, offers a diverse set of topics on masculinities in motion. As such this issue represents a field continuously expanding and being marked by epistemic diversity (see also NORMA editorial, nr 1, 2009). A fascinating ethnographic gender account of the Icelandic charity organisation Mæðrastyrksnefnd, an intriguing queer reading of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe’s (1857–1949) fictionalized autobiography The Story of San Michele, a sophisticated theoretical rereading of masculinity studies as being too androcentric, and a report on gender relations in South Africa are combined in the same issue. An increasing differentiation and diversity seems to be the theme that crystallises the current development of masculinity studies. Read more
